This special double bill event featured two of our most accomplished contemporary authors. Gerard Woodward wrote his first novel, August, in between working in the canteen and filling up chocolate vending machines at Manchester University. It was followed by I'll Go To Bed At Noon, shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. A Curious Earth concludes his trilogy about the inimitable Jones family – a dysfunctional, entertaining but ultimately destructive family based largely on Gerard’s own.
Adam Thorpe’s extraordinary new novel, Between Each Breath, set against the backdrop of Blair’s Britain is a biting, timely satire and a powerfully moving examination of social and emotional disintegration. He has written six previous novels including Ulverton, two collections of stories and five books of poetry, the most recent of which, Birds With a Broken Wing, was published in May.
