To launch the first Manchester Science Festival and with modern technology racing ahead, we asked, ‘where does fact meet fiction?’ Amongst the stars – or closer to home? To get the audience in the mood, local comedian Toby Hadoke performed his one-man show Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf - a bitter-sweet odyssey following Toby's life as it mirrors the ups and downs of his favourite television programme. The show, a highlight of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, has recently been enjoying a sell out tour.

Then we presented a panel debate on science fiction and science fact chaired by Andy Murray, featuring Toby, Doctor Who novelist Mark Michalowski and Doctor Who scriptwriters Robert Shearman and Paul Cornell. This proved to be a truly unique event…

The event took place in the impressive setting of the Museum of Science and Industry, appropriately enough also hosting a wildly-successful Doctor Who exhibition.
